Questions to ask a paralegal
by: Elaine

It's a great idea to talk with people working in the paralegal field. Find out directly from them what their experiences have been. They can provide ideas for you to think about as you research this profession.

Below are suggested questions. Feel free to add to the list.

  • What specialty are you working in? (e.g., real estate, bankruptcy, litigation).
  • How long have you been in your current position and in the career overall?
  • What do you like most about your position, company or firm?
  • What do you like least?
  • How much over time do you perform?
  • How supportive are your employers for training, education and taking on more responsibilities or tasks?
  • What is an average day like?
  • How much do you earn (a ballpark figure)?
  • Are there performance based bonuses?
  • Do you receive yearly salary increases?
  • How is the working environment - collegial?
  • Do you feel valued as part of the team?
  • Do you do any pro bono work?
  • How did you get into the paralegal profession?
  • What is your educational background - associate or bachelor's degree?
  • Do you have a certificate? If so, has that made a difference for employment?
  • What would you suggest to people entering this profession?
  • What kinds of qualities should an aspiring paralegal/legal assistant have?
